Dive into History: A Splash at Auckland's Iconic Tepid Baths

Auckland's CBD isn't just about skyscrapers and harbours; nestled near the waterfront on Customs Street West lies a true city treasure – the Tepid Baths, affectionately known as "The Teps." More than just a swimming pool complex, it's a slice of Auckland's history, beautifully blending early 20th-century charm with modern wellness facilities. Whether you're a local looking for a workout or a visitor seeking a unique experience, The Teps offers a welcoming plunge.

A Dip into History

First opening its doors way back in 1914, the Tepid Baths quickly became a beloved public amenity. Interestingly, it started life with heated saltwater pools, ingeniously warmed using waste heat from the nearby tramways power plant – an engineering marvel of its time! The facility originally featured separate pools for men and women, with the 'male' pool being the largest in New Zealand then. It even holds a Category II Heritage New Zealand listing, recognizing its historical significance.

Over the decades, The Teps has seen significant changes:

  • 1974: The pools were converted from saltwater (fed from the Waitematā Harbour) to freshwater, mainly for easier maintenance.
  • Refurbishments: Major upgrades occurred over the years, including in 1986 and 1997.
  • 2010-2012: The facility closed for a major two-year restoration addressing structural issues, ensuring its legacy continued while modernising the facilities for contemporary users.

It's even employed notable figures, including Malcolm Champion, New Zealand's first Olympic gold medalist swimmer, who was a custodian for many years.

Modern Facilities with Historic Charm

Today, stepping into The Teps feels like embracing both the past and present. You'll find:

  • Pools: A 25-meter, 8-lane main pool (around 27°C) perfect for lap swimming, alongside a smaller, warmer 15-meter learners' pool (around 32°C) ideal for kids or a gentler swim.
  • Relaxation: Unwind in the spa pool (around 39°C), the dry sauna, or the steam room.
  • Fitness: A modern, state-of-the-art fitness centre (gym) is available upstairs.
  • Amenities: A cafe for a post-swim coffee, plus showers and lockers.

Atmosphere and Accessibility

Visitors often describe the atmosphere as relaxing and tranquil, enhanced by the building's heritage architecture, white tiling, and natural light streaming through the roof. It's known for being clean and well-maintained, with friendly and helpful staff. Despite its central location, it can sometimes feel less crowded than other city pools.

Accessibility is well catered for, with wheelchair-accessible parking, entrance, and bathrooms. The pools feature ramp access, water wheelchairs, and hoist availability, ensuring everyone can enjoy the water.
