Lake Alta: A Hidden Gem High in The Remarkables

When you think of Queenstown, you probably picture adrenaline-pumping activities and breathtaking landscapes. And while The Remarkable mountain range certainly delivers on both, there's a hidden gem tucked away high in its peaks that offers a different kind of magic: Lake Alta. This stunning alpine lake is a must-visit for hikers, nature lovers, and anyone seeking a tranquil escape from the bustle of Queenstown.

More Than Just a Pretty Picture

Lake Alta isn't just a beautiful sight; it's a glacial lake, formed by the melting snow and ice of the surrounding mountains. Its waters are a striking turquoise blue, a colour created by the fine glacial silt suspended in the water. The lake sits at an elevation of 1800 meters (5905 feet), above the treeline, offering panoramic views of the surrounding peaks and valleys.

The Hike to Lake Alta

The journey to Lake Alta is part of the adventure. The Lake Alta Track is a well-maintained but moderately challenging hike, starting from the base of The Remarkable ski area. Here's what to expect:

  • Distance: Approximately 3.5 km (2.2 miles) return.
  • Time: Allow 1.5 - 2.5 hours for the return trip.
  • Elevation Gain: Around 300 meters (984 feet).
  • Terrain: The track is mostly gravel and rock, with some steeper sections.
  • Difficulty: Moderate. A reasonable level of fitness is required.

The trail winds its way up through tussock grasslands and past rocky outcrops. As you climb, the views become increasingly spectacular. You'll be rewarded with glimpses of the Wakatipu Basin, Queenstown, and the surrounding mountains. Keep an eye out for native birds and alpine plants along the way.

A Moment of Serenity

Reaching Lake Alta is a truly rewarding experience. The stillness of the water, the dramatic backdrop of The Remarkable, and the sheer scale of the landscape create a sense of awe and tranquility. It's the perfect place to take a break, enjoy a picnic lunch, and simply soak in the beauty of your surroundings.

For Lord of the Rings Fans

Lake Alta holds a special appeal for fans of The Lord of the Rings trilogy. The lake and its surrounding area were used as a filming location for Dimrill Dale, the site where the Fellowship mourns Gandalf after his battle with the Balrog in Moria. Standing on the shores of the lake, it's easy to imagine yourself transported to Middle-earth.

Winter Wonderland

While this blog post primarily focuses on the summer hiking experience, Lake Alta is also accessible in winter, although conditions can be challenging. The lake often freezes over, and the surrounding slopes are covered in snow. Snowshoers and experienced backcountry skiers can access the lake, but it's crucial to check conditions and be properly equipped for winter alpine travel. During the ski season, skiers and snowboarders can ski near Lake Alta, but the lake itself is generally outside the patrolled ski area boundary.

Tips for Visiting Lake Alta:

  • Best Time to Visit: Summer (December to February) for hiking. Winter (June to August) for snowshoeing or backcountry skiing (with appropriate experience and gear).
  • What to Bring: Sturdy hiking boots, water, snacks, sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, and layers of clothing (the weather can change quickly in the mountains).
  • Check Conditions: Before you go, check the weather forecast and trail conditions. The Remarkable website and the Department of Conservation (DOC) website are good resources.
  • Leave No Trace: Pack out all your rubbish and stay on the marked track to protect this fragile alpine environment.
  • Start early in the day: This will avoid carpark congestion.
