Auckland Volcanic Explorer: Cones, Craters & Lava Trails

🔥 Journey Through Fire & Stone

Beneath the bustling streets and sparkling harbours of Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland) lies a powerful story—written not in words, but in fire, stone, and time. Join us on a half-day journey through the Auckland Volcanic Field, where every hill, crater, and ridge tells the tale of earth-shaping eruptions, ancient Māori strongholds, and landscapes frozen in time.

🪨 Meola Reef (Te Tokaroa)

Your adventure begins at the edge of the sea, where molten lava once met the cool waters of the Waitematā Harbour. Walk along the rugged basalt of Meola Reef—formed by a 28,000-year-old eruption—and learn how Auckland’s volcanoes built both the land... and its legends.

🌄 Mt Eden (Maungawhau)

Next, ascend to the summit of Auckland’s highest volcanic cone. Peer into the deep green crater of Maungawhau, a sacred site once home to a thriving Māori pā. From the top, you’ll take in sweeping 360° views of the city and trace the outlines of other volcanic peaks dotting the skyline.

🌳 One Tree Hill (Maungakiekie)

Then, travel back in time at Maungakiekie—once the largest and most significant pā site in the region. Wander through rolling parklands and up the slopes of the twin-crater cone, crowned by an iconic obelisk. Hear the stories of warriors, settlers, and the lone tree that gave the hill its name.

🔴 Mt Wellington (Maungarei)

Your final cone is one of Auckland’s youngest—and most dramatic. With steep flanks and a clearly defined crater, Mt Wellington offers striking views and a perfect final stop to reflect on the city’s restless volcanic heart. Feel the energy of a landscape that still sleeps beneath the surface... but not forever.

As we make our way back to the Sky Tower, take one last look at the ridgelines, craters, and cones that rise quietly from Auckland’s landscape. They may seem like gentle hills today—but each one was born in fire, reshaped by time, and woven into the stories of this land and its people.

You’ve stood on the rim of ancient volcanoes, walked across frozen lava flows, and gazed into craters that once roared with molten fury. More than just a scenic journey, this tour has taken you through the living history of Tāmaki Makaurau—where every peak has a pulse and every stone holds memory.
